WORSLEY

The Brief

This garden in Worsley, Salford began life as a tiny, overlooked space... barely bigger than a postage stamp. But the clients’ vision was ambitious: to create a garden that was low-maintenance yet sophisticated, with a distinctly European aesthetic.

They wanted a space that was architectural in its structure, but still vibrant and alive. They wanted a place where humans and wildlife could coexist harmoniously.

Equally important was the connection to the home: the garden needed to feel immersive from the interior, without simply extending the living room outside. This brief called for a design that was fresh, inventive and capable of making a small footprint feel expansive, functional and visually striking.

The Design

Our approach combined restraint with creativity. Rather than taking the conventional route of extending the indoors outward, we focused on creating an outdoor space that flows naturally into the home while maintaining its own identity. Every surface, structure and planting choice was selected to enhance this sense of continuity and immersion.

Architectural lines, clean geometry, and a considered palette of materials established the European feel the clients desired, while planting schemes were designed to attract and support wildlife, creating a micro-habitat that could flourish alongside human activity.

The layout maximised every square metre, incorporating features that invite movement and exploration, and crafting a garden that feels larger than its actual size. Low-maintenance materials mean the garden stays elegant with minimal effort, while subtly guiding the eye towards carefully curated focal points.

The Garden

The result is a striking, award-winning garden that feels both intimate and expansive. Despite its compact footprint, it offers a strong sense of architectural structure, with spaces for contemplation, enjoyment and interaction with nature.

From inside the home, the garden feels immersive—a layered, textural outdoor environment that draws the eye and lifts the spirits. Outside, the space offers a European elegance and functional simplicity, providing a year-round retreat for the clients while supporting wildlife in a seamless, subtle way.

This project’s creativity, attention to detail, and balance of style and ecology were recognised with a Silver Award at the APLD International Landscape Design Awards, affirming its excellence in small-space, modern landscape design.

The Testimonial

"My new garden is exactly what I needed and this is a result of David's skills to listen to the client. He was very clear about the design process and remained very involved throughout the whole project. I am amazed every day now how the garden in evolving, it is due to David's vision and he continues to think about his projects and how he can make them even more perfect and beautiful." — Ilse Burger
