The Brief

For this project in Wilmslow, Cheshire East, the clients approached us with a simple but exciting challenge: to transform a large, exposed stretch of lawn that was overlooked by neighbouring properties, into a private, pet-proof garden for themselves and their Dachshund, George.

 

They wanted defined areas for relaxation and enjoyment, but without losing the sense of flow or feeling constrained by rigid boundaries.

The Design

In response, we created a sequence of exquisite pocket gardens, each offering its own atmosphere while connecting seamlessly to the next.

 

Privacy was the brief, but the space still needed to feel generous and cohesive, so we used thoughtful screening and subtle transitions to guide movement through the garden.

A standout feature of the design was the use of gabions (wire cages hand-filled with local stone) to form sculptural divisions and raised planting areas. Unlike traditional timber or brick structures, gabions bring a tactile, natural texture that anchors the garden and adds visual depth. Our landscapers approached their construction with the precision of crafting a dry-stone wall, ensuring each stone was placed with intention.

 

The result is a series of strong, characterful elements that elevate the entire scheme.

The Garden

What was once a blank, overlooked lawn has been transformed into an intimate, richly layered sanctuary. Each pocket garden offers something different—sun-soaked areas for lounging, sheltered corners for quiet moments, and textural planting that softens the structural elements and invites exploration.
