HOLLINGWORTH LAKE
The Brief
Creating a space that engages every sense and welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities was a deeply rewarding challenge.
The aim for this Hollingworth Lake Country Park project was to design an inclusive sensory garden where individuals—regardless of mobility, age, or experience—could connect with nature in their own way. The garden needed to be calming, enriching, and educational; and to become a place where the community can come together to gather, learn, and feel inspired.
The Design
This APLD-winning garden was designed to offer a rich, balanced sensory experience from the moment visitors enter.
Planting schemes were chosen for their fragrance, texture, and movement, supported by sound-creating elements like wind chimes. Sculptures, willow structures, and an orchard invite touch, exploration, and seasonal discovery.
At the heart of the garden sits the dome—a dynamic, multi-use structure where park rangers run events, workshops, and classes. Its presence helps transform the space into a hub for learning, wellbeing, and community connection.
The Garden
The result is a sensory garden that is peaceful, engaging and truly inclusive.
Accessibility shaped every aspect of the design. A woodland walk encourages gentle exploration, while wide, non-slip stone pathways ensure wheelchair users can navigate comfortably and safely. Raised beds bring planting to an accessible height, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the sensory experience.
In 2025, the sensory garden was honoured with a Silver Award in the Specialty Project category at the APLD International Landscape Design Awards for its thoughtful layout, innovative sensory features, and meticulous attention to detail.
The Testimonial
"David has helped us create a beautiful new sensory garden at Hollingworth Lake Country Park. He has been very supportive, right from the initial meeting, through to the final plans and planting.
After discussion about the styte and use of the space, he produced some fantastic plans and we were lucky to be able create this garden that will be open to the public and local groups to enjoy.
I would highly recommend DK Designs for our type of public garden, and am looking forward to showing off the space to the visitors." — Adam Clayton
