LYDGATE

The Brief

When we first visited this High Peaks property in Lydgate, the main garden area was dominated by a tarmac driveway and a small patch of artificial lawn, open to the road. The rear courtyard featured blank rendered walls and lacked personality. Despite its challenges, the site offered breathtaking views of the rolling High Peaks, which became the central inspiration for the design.

The clients’ brief was clear: they wanted a child-friendly garden for their daughter Eve, incorporating play space and opportunities to grow plants, while transforming the front area into a more practical, private and welcoming environment.

The goal was to create a garden that was both visually engaging and interactive, encouraging the family to spend time outdoors and explore the beauty of their surroundings.

The Design

To meet the brief, we introduced a grazing garden concept where plants serve dual purposes: providing visual appeal as well as edible fruits and herbs. This approach not only enhanced the aesthetics but also inspired Eve to engage with the garden and develop a connection with nature.

The main deck was positioned to maximise sunlight and capture the stunning panoramic views, creating a central hub for family gatherings. Privacy and security were addressed with a cedar slatted fence and gate, while the rear courtyard received a green wall and inset seating, adding texture, depth and functionality.

A careful mix of trees, shrubs and perennials was planted to bring the garden closer to the house and create a seamless flow from interior to exterior, ensuring that every moment spent outdoors felt connected to the surrounding landscape.

The Garden

The completed garden is a family-focused outdoor space that balances practicality, beauty and play. The front area now feels welcoming and secure, while the rear courtyard offers a quiet retreat. The garden frames the stunning High Peaks views, turning what was once a carpark-like space into a private sanctuary.

Most importantly, Eve has an engaging, playful environment, and the whole family can enjoy fresh herbs, fruits and flowers at every turn.
