HIGHER CHISWORTH

The Brief

Nestled in the picturesque High Peak village of Higher Chisworth, this project involved transforming a steep, overgrown rocky slope beside a Grade II listed mill cottage from the 1780s.

The clients wanted a garden that felt like an extension of the surrounding countryside, blending seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Derbyshire Peaks while respecting the historic character of the property.

This project presented a number of challenges, including its precipitous slope, conservation restrictions, and the need to incorporate practical features such as a garden shed and a green roof, all requiring approval from the council’s conservation officer.

The Design

The design sought to blur the boundaries between garden and landscape, creating a sense of unconfined natural beauty.

A wildflower meadow softens the edges of the slope, while carefully placed pathways, terraces, and planting zones invite exploration and offer panoramic views of the surrounding hills.

Every element was carefully considered to complement the historic mill cottage and its environment. The garden shed was relocated and given a green roof to maintain visual harmony, while native planting and naturalistic materials were used to integrate the design into the wider landscape.

The overall approach was about creating continuity with the countryside, rather than imposing a rigid structure.

The Garden

The completed garden offers a magical, immersive experience, seamlessly connecting the home to the Derbyshire Peaks. The wildflower meadow and layered planting create colour, texture, and seasonal interest, while the terraces and paths provide usable outdoor spaces for relaxation and enjoyment.

This project has earned both national and international recognition, winning awards in the UK and the USA, and was featured in a six-page spread in Derbyshire Life magazine, highlighting the success of a design that harmonises history, natural beauty, and contemporary landscape thinking.
