The Brief
Nestled in the heart of Delph in Saddleworth, this private garden offered the perfect opportunity to create a space that harmonised with its stunning natural surroundings while meeting the practical needs of everyday life. The clients wanted a garden that could be enjoyed year-round, a retreat that felt intimate and serene yet functional.
The challenge was to balance artistry with usability, making sure that every element worked seamlessly with the local climate and the clients’ lifestyle.
The Design
Our design focused on layering spaces to create both visual interest and functional zones. Sunken seating areas were crafted using natural stone-filled gabions, providing intimate spots to relax while blending naturally into the surrounding landscape.
With that in mind, the dining terrace closest to the house is deliberately angled to capture the stunning views towards the Peaks beyond, to further connect the garden to its environment.
For low-maintenance durability, we incorporated Millboard decking and porcelain paving, chosen to withstand the Saddleworth weather without compromising on style.
Additional elements such as timber seating, a lush lawn with inset stepping stones, and a striking Corten water bowl were thoughtfully positioned to combine visual impact with practical utility, creating a layered garden.
The Garden
The completed garden is a harmonious blend of texture, form, and function. The sunken seating areas offer sheltered calm, the water features bring movement and tranquillity, and the hidden dining space allows for private entertaining. The lawn, pathways, and carefully selected planting tie everything together, resulting in a low-maintenance yet inviting space that feels alive in every season.
The garden now serves as a seamless extension of the home. It's a private sanctuary that balances beauty, practicality, and year-round enjoyment.
