CHORLTON
The Brief
When the Kennedys first contacted us about their small back garden in Chorlton, South Manchester, they described it as a blank canvas—but one lacking any real charm. The space was dominated by an oversized trampoline and a poorly built platform attached to the house, offering little beauty, atmosphere or functionality.
What they did have was a clear and exciting vision...
Having travelled extensively throughout Southeast Asia, they were captivated by its lush planting atmospheres and sense of escapism. Their dream was to bring that same feeling into their own garden, to create a private retreat that felt worlds away from urban Manchester.
For us, this was a dream brief. A clean slate paired with a strong stylistic direction meant potential to craft something immersive, exotic and deeply personal was endless.
The Design
Drawing on his own extensive travels throughout Southeast Asia, our designer David set out to design a garden that would feel enveloping, tranquil and richly planted. The core concept focused on creating an experience rather than simply a space.
We introduced three interconnected platforms, each designed to offer a different calming effect and a subtle change in perspective as you move through the garden. These platforms helped structure the layout, conceal level changes and create natural zones for contemplation, conversation and relaxation.
To reinforce the sensory feel of Southeast Asia, we designed and created a bespoke water feature with bamboo poles. This auditory layer was essential in transporting the senses and creating that tropical ambience.
Of course, planting was central to the design. We curated a palette of bold, architectural and exotic species—plants that would evoke the tropics but still thrive in Manchester’s climate. Each was carefully placed to build layers of texture, height and movement, ensuring the garden felt immersive and full from day one.
The Garden
The finished garden delivers the transformative experience the clients hoped for—and more. What was once a cluttered, uninspired space is now a lush, atmospheric retreat that feels far removed from South Manchester.
Visitors often fall silent when they step outside, greeted by towering banana plants, elegant Schefflera taiwaniana, glossy Aspidistra, and dramatic giant flowering ginger lilies. These are all sheltered under the graceful fronds of Tasmanian tree ferns, creating a green canopy that instantly transports you to another climate.
This garden is proof that with knowledge, care and thoughtful placement, a tropical-inspired garden can flourish in the North of England. The platforms offer serene places to sit, unwind or entertain, while the water feature adds a continuous sense of calm.
A year after completion, the clients summed up the transformation perfectly: “It’s full to bursting with plants, and we love it. It genuinely feels like we could be anywhere in SE Asia!” The garden now stands as a living homage to their travels, a personal paradise crafted from a once-ordinary, overlooked space.
This garden was featured in the October 2025 edition of Pro Landscaper in an article entitled “Flavours of Asia.”
