CHEADLE HULME

The Brief

When Rachel and Ryan approached us, they had a spacious and wonderfully private garden in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, but it no longer reflected the way they lived.

The space felt tired and disjointed, dominated by dated crazy paving, overworked curly topiary and an uneven lawn that made the garden feel smaller than it was.

With their newly built extension opening out onto the garden through wide sliding glass doors, the view had become a central part of their home. They wanted a landscape that matched their modern interior—clean, cohesive and welcoming—and one that would enhance daily life rather than working against it.

Their wishlist was clear: a contemporary, stylish garden that could shift effortlessly between entertaining, relaxation and family living. They envisioned a practical all-weather dining area for year-round use, a cosy seating zone for evenings together, and a generous lawn where children could play freely. Above all, they wanted a garden that felt fresh, usable and built to last.

The Design

We started the design process by building a comprehensive mood book, helping Rachel and Ryan clarify their aesthetic direction—materials, tones, planting styles and the overall feeling they wanted the garden to evoke. This collaborative step ensured that every detail aligned with their tastes and lifestyle.

From here, we developed a fully considered concept plan, mapping out the structure of the garden and the flow between different zones. The design integrated clean geometry, welcoming textures and a palette of timeless, durable materials that complemented the architecture of the extension.

Our planning addressed not only visual harmony but also practicality. We explored ways to create sheltered outdoor living areas, ensure easy circulation across the garden, and incorporate planting that would stay elegant with minimal upkeep. The layout balanced modernity with warmth, making each space intentional, comfortable and versatile.

The Garden

The completed garden is a refined and family-friendly outdoor retreat that feels connected both to the home and to the lives lived within it. The new all-weather dining area provides a stylish hub for gatherings, perfectly positioned to catch light throughout the day. Adjacent, a more intimate seating area offers a cosy spot for evening relaxation, framed by soft planting that brings texture and calm.

The reinstated lawn is now level, open and generous—a functional space for children to run and play while still fitting seamlessly into the contemporary aesthetic. Carefully selected planting introduces structure, seasonality and movement, ensuring the garden looks vibrant throughout the year without requiring heavy maintenance.

What was once an outdated and disconnected space is now a cohesive modern landscape: elegant yet robust, uplifting yet practical, and designed for a family who wanted more from their garden than simply a view. It is a place to gather, unwind and grow—beautifully aligned with Rachel and Ryan’s vision for their home.

The Testimonial

"David completely transformed our garden—he designed our back garden with beautiful decking, a patio, and an outdoor kitchen, and we’re absolutely thrilled with the results. He also redesigned our driveway and front garden, which look fantastic. David’s attention to detail, creativity, and professionalism were outstanding throughout. Couldn’t recommend him highly enough!" — Rachel and Ryan
